Stress is Not Sexy

How Stress Wreaks Havoc on your Body

We all deal with some level of stress each and every day. It’s how we manage that stress that affects many aspects of our physical appearance. When you are stressed—whether it’s about your job, money, relationships, or even your appearance—you wear it, and it shows.

Plain and simple, stressing is not sexy and your body serves as the punching bag to prove that harsh truth.

How Do We Cope With the Stress of Life

glass of red wineThink of how stress affects your everyday life. You lose sleep, overeat, indulge in one too many glasses of wine, skip out on the gym after that long day that never seemed to end, the list goes on and on.

“Giving in” is a universal coping mechanism that we use as that perfect excuse to succumb to everyday stress. With each crutch we lean on to help us get by, our body suffers as the consequence.

Where Does Stress Show Up First?

Your Skin

Think back to when you were a teenager preparing for a big exam. Did you suffer from breakouts? Now think of how your skin looks now, in those times of deep stress. If you’re living in a world of constant breakouts, there’s a clear reason for it. Stress is one of the top reasons adults deal with daily breakouts, and learning how to let go and manage your mood can help to keep you from being forced to stock up on acne cream.

If you suffer from skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema, stress will only aggravate those conditions. Stop drowning yourself in a world of stress and take back what’s rightfully yours—healthy skin.

The constant up and down of your weight is not healthy for your body. In times of stress, if you find your weight fluctuating erratically, this could be a sign that stress has taken the reigns on your life. Weight fluctuations can create sagging skin, and that will make you look much older than you are.

Late nights combined with early mornings are a recipe for disaster, and your weight woes may never improve if you maintain this constant struggle. Your body needs ample rest to restore your metabolic function, and it’s not going to do that if you’re sleep deprived. Your problems will still be there in the morning, but you’ll have a clearer mind to tackle them with proper shut-eye.

In case you didn’t know, your hair and nails are made almost entirely of protein, in the form of keratin. Breakdowns in your body can mean a breakdown in your protein levels—causing your hair and nails to split and break. Be kind to yourself, and find ways to release stress.

Stress Ages You…In Dog Years

Here’s a prime example: Think of any of our past Presidents. How did they look when they took office? Glowing, hot off an election success, right? And then think of how they looked at the end of their term, gray hair on full display, wrinkles on point, eager to get back to a more normal way of life.

Stress has the unique ability to age you the way almost nothing else can—from head to toe. Finding ways to limit your stress and release the negative energy from your life will not only help you live longer, but you will look better too!
