Reduce the Redness of Rosacea with IPLJanuary 25th, 2019 by Dr. Michael Glass
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Can Minimize the Appearance of Rosacea
Rosacea is a skin condition that can cause redness on the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. While unfortunately, there’s no known cure for rosacea, you can improve the look of your skin with intense pulsed light or IPL.
Learn what IPL is, how it works, and what you can expect when using it to treat rosacea.
What Is IPL?
Intense pulsed light devices are non-laser light sources that use intense pulses of light to treat rosacea and other skin issues. These pulses of light consist of different wavelengths that target the underlying layer of skin, rather than its surface.
When the second layer of your skin, the dermis, absorbs the light energy, it converts it to heat. This heat then destroys the blood vessels being targeted, evening out skin tone.
What Can I Expect During an IPL Session?
During an IPL session, we’ll put a cool gel on your skin over the area being treated. Then, your technician will apply the glass surface of the IPL device to your skin and pulses of light will flash. These pulses may cause a slight stinging sensation, like that of a small rubber band.
IPL sessions typically last between 10-30 minutes, depending on the size of the area you’re treating.
How Will My Skin Look after an IPL Session?
After an IPL session, you may experience some mild swelling and pinkness. This typically goes away over the next 24 hours, and you can minimize these effects with an ice pack.
Bruising is also possible, although less common. Your skin may also feel somewhat drier in the days following treatment, so be sure to use a good moisturizer and follow our aftercare instructions.
How Long Will the Results of an IPL Session Last?
While IPL is not a cure for rosacea, it gives patients a better outcome than topical medications alone. Plus, you can experience benefits from IPL treatments for quite some time—in fact,
some patients have reported clearer skin up to eight years after the procedure.
How Many IPL Sessions Will I Need?
Most patients need between 2-4 IPL sessions. These sessions are spaced out at monthly intervals for the best results.
