A Surprising Cosmetic Procedure Can Minimize Melasma’s Effects

Melasma is a skin condition that causes gray or brownish spots. Typically, these spots occur on the face, although they can also appear on other parts of the body, like the neck or arms. Although the skin changes associated with melasma are harmless, the disorder can unfortunately, take an emotional toll on those who develop it.

The good news is that there are effective ways to manage melasma.

Read on to learn more about them, as well as the cosmetic procedure we recommend for our patients struggling with melasma.

 What Causes Melasma?

The medical community isn’t entirely sure what causes melasma. However, there’s a known association between melasma, estrogen, and progesterone sensitivity.

Because of this connection, birth control pills, pregnancy, and hormone therapy can trigger melasma’s onset.

Additionally, it’s believed that melasma is caused by stress and thyroid disease. Sun exposure also plays a role in melasma, because the sun’s ultraviolet rays affect the cells that control pigment.

How Is Melasma Treated?

Patients who have melasma—or suspect they do—should:

  • Use Sun Protection – To control melasma, you’ll want to look for a sunscreen that uses physical blockers, like zinc and titanium dioxide. These blockers stop light and different wavelengths from coming through. Helpful hint: we carry sunscreen at our office! Just drop by or call us at 775.204.3508 for a recommendation.
  • Take Medication & Use Topical Treatments as Prescribed – Your primary physician may prescribe medication. As with any medical advice, you’ll want to carefully adhere to it for the best results.
  • Try a Chemical Peel –  Chemical peels are often recommended for melasma. Peels work by increasing cell turnover, so unwanted pigment is removed from the skin faster.

What Can You Tell Me About Chemical Peels?

At Esteem Medical Spa, we typically recommend our melanage peel for our patients with melasma. This peel  reduces the appearance of hyperpigmentation after sun exposure, making it the ideal treatment for melasma patients who want a beauty boost. woman-with-freckles-getting-a-chemical-peel-treatment

Even better, we’re currently running a promotion on the melanage peel throughout the month of November! Normally, this peel is priced at $400. However, right now you can get the melanage peel for just $295.
