Don’t Let Sun Damage Get You DownJuly 23rd, 2019 by Dr. Michael Glass
Instead, Protect Yourself Going Forward & Consider IPL or Laser Treatment
Plenty of people believe they look better with a tan, which is why sun exposure is such a double-edged sword. A new tan seemingly offers a “healthy” glow, improving appearance.
Yet in reality, that tan is evidence that the sun has actually damaged skin—which causes people to look older at a much younger age.
Worse still, most people who deliberately tan do so because they love how they look with darker skin. That’s why it can be so disheartening years down the road to realize that by neglecting sunscreen, you no longer love how you look. Instead, each time you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror, you can’t help but notice the damage caused by sun exposure.
So, you see things like fine lines, wrinkles, sunspots, age spots, and changing skin texture. If you’re accustomed to a mindset of “look good, feel good,” this can be very depressing … especially if you’re convinced that sun damage has ruined your good looks.
Fortunately, you’re not without options …
What to Do If You Have Sun Damaged Skin
- Buy the Sunscreen You Need – Not all sunscreen is created equal. If you spend lots of time at the pool, for instance, you want a water-resistant sunscreen with a high SPF. Don’t have one? Head to Esteem for our 30% off sunscreen sale, running the entire month of July.
- Wear Sunscreen Faithfully, Frequently and Without Fail – Although you may not be able to undo sun damage, you can prevent it from worsening by wearing sunscreen regularly and consistently.
- Use Sunscreen Generously – Most people don’t use enough sunscreen. Not sure how much you need? As a general rule, you should use a shot glass-sized amount to cover your entire body.
- Consider a Cosmetic Treatment – If sun damage is damaging your self-esteem, there are cosmetic treatments that can minimize the sun’s effects. For instance, both IPL photorejuvenation and carbon dioxide laser resurfacing are highly effective at reducing sun and age spots. Additionally, carbon dioxide laser resurfacing tightens skin, improves its texture, and diminishes wrinkling.
