Botox for Tension Headaches: How & Why
The dreaded headache: everyone has experienced one at some point. Sometimes a headache is just a headache, but if you are experiencing frequent and severe headaches, you may want to consult your doctor. One of the lesser known treatments for tension headaches, cluster headaches, and chronic migraines, is Botox.
At Esteem Medical Spa, Botox is used to treat and prevent tension headaches as effectively as possible.
How do I know if this treatment is right for me?
Botox for tension headaches may be right for you if:
- You are over the age of 18.
- You are experiencing upwards of 15 headaches a month.
- Your headaches are lasting more than 4 hours a day.
It’s important to note that this treatment isn’t for everyone, it’s a preventative treatment and results may take a few weeks to take effect.
How does the treatment work?
Botox can be injected into 7 of the key areas that headaches or migraines typically stem from, the muscles of the:
- sides of the head,
- back of the head
- and neck muscles.
Doctors have not identified the main reason that Botox alleviates tension headaches and chronic migraines, but have suggested that it blocks the nerves that carry pain to the brain, or blocks the chemicals that cause migraines.
Many patients have turned to Botox after trying unsuccessful prescriptions to cure their tension headaches and migraines.
Dr. Glass will evaluate your past medical history to assess if you may be a good candidate for this treatment.
What can I expect?
If you are new to Botox and are looking to explore the treatment further, Dr. Glass will be there every step of the way to answer any questions you may have.
The whole treatment takes about 30 minutes, as long as a regular doctor’s appointment.
As previously noted, after receiving the treatment you may not experience any changes for a few weeks.
There is no down time associated with the treatment and you will be able to walk out of the office and into your normal schedule.
