Three things to consider when choosing treatments to repair aged and sun damaged skin

When you decide to take steps toward repairing your skin, which may be showing signs of age and sun damage, there are several factors involved in making a decision about which treatment to use. Some you may guess without our help, others the Esteem Medical Spa staff would like to explain to you.

Non-ablative vs ablative skin resurfacing

We will start with the technical terms like non-ablative versus ablative. Non-ablative resurfacing means that the laser beams penetrate the skin surface and coagulate the affected tissue without damaging the surface of the skin.  This allows for faster healing and recovery times. Cosmetic procedures like IPL Photorejuvenation are considered non-ablative.

When you think of ablative treatments, think of procedures like carbon dioxide (CO2) laser resurfacing. These treatments vaporize both the surface and deep areas of the skin taking the signs of sun damage and aging away. While it is one of the most effective procedures available, and minimal visits are required to see results, a patient will spend more time recovering.

As mentioned before, time is a big factor when considering resurfacing treatments. If you do not have time to spend recovering, then a less invasive procedure might be the right choice for you. However, that might mean multiple treatments as they can take three to five sessions before patients see optimal results.

Lifestyle

While our main focus has been about repairing skin that has been damaged by age and the sun, other lifestyle factors can contribute to fine lines, discoloration of the skin and premature aging. Your diet, the amount of sleep and exercise you get and smoking and alcohol consumption can have a negative impact on your skin’s appearance and potentially affect the results you see.

We take each factor into consideration when helping a patient choose which procedure is right for them. Call us to set up an appointment to take your first steps toward healthier, younger looking skin.
